We had the privilege of looking on while volunteers from Church of the Holy Spirit in Tulsa made some widows in their congregation feel very loved this weekend. A group of six volunteers took on small home maintenance projects like cleaning gutters, adjusting weather stripping and changing hard-to-reach lightbulbs. In return, they got homemade snickerdoodles!

Valentine’s Day is coming! How do you plan on making a widow feel loved?

- Through Stand in the Gap for Widows, volunteers from Church of the Holy Spirit spent a Saturday morning helping widows in their congregation with small home maintenance projects.

- Projects included yard work, testing fire alarms, changing hard to reach light bulbs and flipping a heavy mattress.

- “After your husband dies and you get through the fog of grief, there’s a panic that sets in. This ministry was an answer to prayer.”

- Volunteers spent about one hour taking on small projects in four different widows’ homes.

- Stand in the Gap for Widows Program Manager, Buddy Stone, got in on the fun.

- “Almost half the women over 65 years of age in the United States are widows. About 7 in 10 of these women live alone.” (U.S. Census, 2000)

- A group of six volunteers completed tasks in a fraction of the time that it would have taken the homeowners.

- “A lot of times I feel very alone and vulnerable. I hate to ask for help. When they said at church that they were going to come help, it made me feel valued and loved.”
