One of the most popular offerings in our Stand in the Gap for Widows toolkit is the small group guide. This guide provides our partners with helpful advice in beginning and facilitating a small group for widows.
Our partners have used this guide to facilitate small groups in their communities as far away as Kenya!
From almost the moment that we started serving widows in small groups, we knew they needed materials to facilitate the conversation.
So we started writing!
In 2023, we published our first small group participant packet. Designed to be printed at home, our first small group study started with common experiences early in the widow experience such as loneliness and isolation and was designed to foster discussion within the group.
When we started developing our next curriculum, the widows team spent a great deal of time in prayer and ultimately felt led to the theme of hope.
Although every woman’s journey with grief is unique, there are also themes that help guide people to hope and healing from grief. Our Stand in the Gap for Widows team gathered these themes into practical, actionable small group discussion questions and opportunities for personal reflection.
The resulting small group guide, Overflowing with Hope, is based on the science of hope and offers research-based lessons, follow-up questions for discussion, and journal prompts. Each lesson begins with a personal testimony sourced from Stand in the Gap for Widows’ partners across the United States.
The curriculum includes twelve lessons, each divided into two parts, making it usable for 12 or 24 sessions of small group meetings.
We also published a leader guide which includes all the participant content, plus some additional insights for group facilitators.
For the first time, we are offering our curriculum through a print-on-demand provider, meaning both the participant guide and the leader guide are now available for purchase!
